When children and teens have health coverage, they are able
to get the health care they need when they need it. That means
they are less likely to miss school or end up seeking lower
quality yet higher cost care in the emergency room. It also
means their families don’t have to choose between paying the
rent or paying for needed prescriptions.
Healthy Kids mean a healthier Oregon. Oregon Healthy Kids is
dedicated to making sure every child and teen in the state has
access to health insurance their families can afford.
Healthy Kids provides no-cost, low-cost and full-cost health
coverage options for uninsured Oregon children and teens up to
19 years of age. Coverage lasts for one full year and covers all
health needs, including doctor visits, dental care, vision,
mental or behavioral health services, prescriptions, and more.
Children will not be turned away due to pre-existing conditions
or be put on a waiting list.
No family makes too much money for Healthy Kids. Family
income will determine whether a child is eligible for the
no-cost, low-cost or full-cost coverage option. For example, a
family of four earning as much as $66,000 a year may qualify for
low-cost option.
The Office of Healthy Kids
The Office of Healthy Kids is a part of the new Oregon Health
Authority, and enrollment work is done online or through the
Department of Human Services offices across the state. An
Advisory Committee and an appointed Steering Committee offer
feedback and guidance to Healthy Kids. The members of these
committees include insurance providers, advocacy groups, and
service providers.
Healthy Kids is a leader in responding to the national
challenge to provide health coverage for uninsured children.
The funding for Healthy Kids comes from a one percent premium
on insurance companies and from matching federal funding for
children’s health insurance.
Mission
Since Healthy Kids expansion in July 2009, Healthy Kids has
enrolled thousands more children and continues to enroll
children across the state. The goal is ensure that at least 95
percent of Oregon children have access to health coverage their
families can afford.
Expanding health coverage for children is an important step
to lowering the price of health care for everyone. Children
without health coverage are far more likely to go without
regular, preventative care and end up getting expensive
treatment in an emergency room instead. Providing health
benefits to children is inexpensive compared to the cost of
letting them remain uninsured, and creates economic benefit over
a lifetime.
